User’s guide to understanding privacy

What is data collection?

Every website/mobile application must collect certain data in order to operate. A privacy policy policy should describe what user data is collected.

What about Hugo?

Hugo collects personal health record data (PHRD) on your behalf. PHRD can come from a variety of places including patient portals, pharmacies, and wearable or wireless devices.  In order for the Hugo platform to gather any information, you must create a Hugo account. This requires your name, email address, and password. You must also authorize your portals to connect with Hugo by entering your username and passwords.

What is data use?

Always read this section carefully. Agreeing to any privacy policy means allowing a company to use your data in the manner described. This often means allowing a business to profit from your data in exchange for using their services for free. This is how your data can be “monetized.”

What about Hugo?

We seek permission on two levels: Implicitly (you agree to the data use outlined in our privacy policy) and explicitly (you’ll be asked specifically about any data use not outlined in the privacy policy). For example, if you decide to participate in a research study, you’ll be specifically asked about using your data for that purpose.

What does advertising have to
do with privacy?

Advertising is a very profitable business model for internet companies. Using data for this purpose requires permission from users; the terms of which are in the privacy policy. Sometimes a user may be able to “opt-out” of receiving personalized ads. However, by agreeing to privacy terms from a company that provides advertisements you should be aware that your data are being used for this purpose.

What about Hugo?

There are no advertisements on Hugo. If we ever consider an advertising program, we would seek feedback from our users and ask for your explicit permission to use your data.

Is security part of privacy?

Yes. Every privacy policy should include a section on security. You should be confident that your data are well protected but be aware that no business can guarantee 100% protection.

What about Hugo?

We treat the privacy and security of your PHR data with the utmost importance. We take extensive precautions to ensure the safety of your information from any unauthorized access, disclosure, or use. To earn your trust, we employ industry-leading technical, physical, and administrative security measures.  Read our security statement here.
